Star Wars: The Force Unleashed I asset Holoroom

rendered image of asset
This is the very first asset i build when i joined LucasArts Singapore. The studio was not officially up running yet so there was no development kits. i created the model and all its textures and sent them over to the San Francisco studio for review in game. This asset was used heavily in the Kashyyyk level, in whole or in parts.

the trickiest part for this asset is not the columns but the oval-shaped floor. since i am only allowed 2 x 1024 textures, i would never get enough resolution on the floor if i do not do some sort of tiling. things would be easier if it is perfectly circular, unfortunately this is not the case. and the planks are not converging to an exact centre too.

my solution was to make the floor in a circular shape first, and then break it up into equal sections, each mapped to the same texture (refer to image below). i did go in and randomized texture assignment for some of the planks. After doing that, i started to manipulate the mesh into an oval shape and offset the center where the planks converged to. the irregular edges is pure manual work to minimize the repetitiveness and i think the effort pays off.

floor mesh divided into 7 sections and each mapped to the same part of the texture map

truly glad i can finally do a show and tell on my very first piece of work done in LucasArts ... with many more after.
